Another Reason to Visit Arizona: The Great American Seed Up is Back!
You may have noticed that RMSA has close ties to the southwestern US in addition to our Mountain West work. One of our favorite recurring events in Arizona is fast approaching—and could be a perfect excuse for you to make that trip to the beautiful Southwest!
The Great American Seed Up
October 29, 2016 — Phoenix, AZ
$7.50 per person
Uptown Farmers Market
North Phoenix Baptist Church
5757 North Central
The first 400 tickets purchased include a copy of Basic Seed Saving ($5.95 value) by Bill McDorman.
The Great American Seed Up is a chance to walk into a room full of 60+ seed varieties (non gmo of course) in bulk, scoop up as many seeds as you like, and take them home for an incredibly low price! The first two Seed Ups were a huge success (even doubling in size), so we expect this event to be even greater with two sessions; morning and afternoon. Continuous workshops will be presented in growing, storing and saving your seeds.
More exciting news! We are looking at sharing this awesome idea and will be franchising the Great American Seed Up in the not too distant future. Contact Janis: Janis@urbanfarm.org to find out how to bring a Seed Up to your community.

RMSA invites seed savers, farmers, gardeners, food activists, and lovers of diversity to join us for an historic gathering of Seed Stewards across the Rocky Mountain West. This unique conference event will include fascinating presentations, hands-on activities, and networking opportunities alongside art, music, and more!
We are beginning to plan the content and conference schedule with an illustrious lineup of speakers—Dr. Gary Nabhan, Flordemayo, and Emigdio Ballon to name just a few. The Summit will take place across three concurrent breakout rooms and a general session with keynote talks, offering you an expansive range of information and experiences to choose from. As an example, topics to be explored include intellectual property rights for traditional seed varieites, community seed vaults, and seed saving as cultural resource conservation.
Registration for this first-of-its-kind seed gathering is now open. Click here to reserve your space at our Early Bird price of just $150 (until January 1st). The two-day Summit is complemented by an optional pre-conference field trip to the Tesuque Pueblo Seed Bank on March 2nd.
We are excited to hold this event at the beautiful Hotel Santa Fe conference facility. Rooms are available at a discount by following this link. We will see you soon in Santa Fe!
"SEED" Screening and "Know Your Grower" in Boise
We have one more SEED screening to announce this month—this time in Boise, Idaho on Thursday, October 20, 2016 at The Flicks!
Co-presented by Snake River Seed Cooperative and Treasure Valley Food Coalition, this one-night screening also features a "get to know your grower" meetup to introduce the local Boise growers and farmers who supply seeds to the Snake River co-op.
The meet-and-greet begins at 6:00 p.m. and the film starts at 7:00. RMSA's Bill McDorman will host the post-film Q&A along with Casey O'Leary of the Snake River Seed Cooperative and special guests. Mark your calendars and help spread the word!
Grow Your Imagination with One Million New Seed Savers
Imagine what it would be like if we had one million people saving seeds across the United States. This bold vision is entirely possible—and now is the time for you to help make it happen.
The release of the groundbreaking new documentary film SEED: The Untold Story is directing the attention of thousands of people to the growing seed movement. What is needed now is to step up our collective efforts and rejoin the ancient ritual of seed saving on a broad scale. We’re dreaming big and setting a goal of creating one million new seed savers across the country.
Collective Eye Films (Seed: The Untold Story) and the Rocky Mountain Seed Alliance invite you to join us in this important and inspiring campaign by committing to grow and save at least one seed variety. You don’t have to be an experienced gardener to participate. Learning to save seeds is simpler than you might think! We’ll provide you with helpful resources to get started. All you need is a patch of soil (or garden pot), along with some passion and imagination.
Click here to learn more and join the Million Seed Savers campaign! Together we can reclaim our seed freedom and preserve our legacy of seed saving for future generations.
Get a Jump on Grain School—Sign up for Email Announcements
Each January, RMSA and the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs present a three-day exploration into the world of heritage grains: Grain School. Participants receive a deep grounding into techniques for growing and harvesting grains—and of course, delicious ways to eat them!
This powerful course launched in 2016 and will continue to be offered annually. Graduates from this past session (pictured here) contributed to RMSA's exciting Heritage Grain Trials project, which is identifying and assessing ancient and regionally appropriate grains to help rekindle local grain systems in the Mountain West. Read more about Grain School on the RMSA website.
Registrations for 2017 are not yet announced, but you can be the first to find out by signing up for our Grain School Updates email list here.
